Jon Harris
Jon Harris is a renowned painter and illustrator who had lived in Cambridge since his student days before relocating in recent years to Kings Lynn. His artwork and architectural visualisations for heritage projects across the UK are a significant element of his portfolio. Jon’s designs for our launch literature include maps of St Mary’s and its village, showing how remotely St Mary’s was sited.
Artist About Cambridge is the first published collection of Harris’ artwork. Two signed copies will be among our Appeal Raffle prizes.
“What draws a draughtsman like me to this great raw tub of a cobble tower? Its inexplicableness; its sheer oddity, with that sentry-box perched parrot-like on its shoulder; and not least the anxiousness of my pen in my back pocket to have a go.
When it comes to ancient and still evolving buildings, I’m a sort of dowser; the pen’s my wand, reacting to traces and telltales and infills that the casual eye scan is apt to miss. With St Mary’s tower, I don’t want to let go until its Saxon or Norman secrets are all in the bag! Meanwhile, what an honour to be involved in helping Raise the Roof of Wortham’s lovely church – good luck in all your efforts, for it and against pylons!”
